Online Quilting Class Preview

The following clips are taken from one of Ruth's classrooms to give you an idea of what to expect when you sign up for a class. We guarantee you will learn and pick up lots of tidbits along the way that you can use in many projects.

Ruth's classes are full of detail and packed with tips and tricks along the way.

"I find when using these threads, particularly the metallic thread, you will require a top-stitching or metafill needle. These needles have larger eyes than regular sewing needles, which can help prevent the thread from shredding."

As a teacher she is already aware of many problems that can occur with your sewing machine while working on your project.

"If you see loops like this on the back, it means the thread is not in the tension disks properly. Remove your top thread and re-thread your machine, ensuring the presser foot is in the up position."

Her classes also include pressing instructions.

"Press all seams to one side as directed. To do this, always start by pressing the seam flat as sewn to set the stitches and fabric before opening the two sections. Position the section with seam to be pressed towards on top (usually darkest fabric), then use the tip and side of the iron to fold this top section over the seam. Pressing is done from the right side of the block, however always check the seam on the back to ensure it is pressed correctly and lays flat."

Ruth will take you through the complete workshop from choosing your fabrics and feet for your sewing machine...

... to quilting, binding and adding your label and hanging sleeve. She is always open to hearing your ideas/suggestions to customize your project and will help you achieve them.

In the discussion forum, students start by introducing themselves or simply sign in. You do not have to chat if you don't want to, however the more active the classroom is, the more you will learn so Ruth encourages this. You will learn lots here and sometimes about topics not directly involved with the lesson. Here is one example:

Joann asks "I don't have a design wall, how can I compromise?"

Paula chips in with "I bought a flannel backed tablecloth from Jo-ann Fabrics and use that for my design wall"

Ruth added "If you are short of space, try sticking a piece of velcro along the top of a cabinet and the other section to a piece of flannel. You can then put the design wall up when you need to or remove it when not in use. Some also like using felt instead of flannel, however this is more expensive or cotton batting can be another option."

Glordia said "For a small design area, I made Ruth's quilter's tote and added a flannel insert. When I'm with my quilt group, I lay it on the table open and work from there. Time to go home, I fold it back up and the pieces stay put until I have a chance to work on it again."
